Core Knowledge

NADC Head Start/ABC Teachers use Core Knowledge Curriculum with local input in the classrooms. The idea behind Core Knowledge is simple and powerful, knowledge builds on knowledge. The more you know the more you are able to learn. Every child needs to reach goals in a coherent, age appropriate sequence to build this foundation for their learning years ahead of them.

Teachers also use Core Knowledge (with local design) within COPA as their assessment tool. The Core Knowledge allows for data to be entered online, providing the opportunity for programs and grantees to access the assessment data in a variety of ways that can assist teachers, program specialists, and grantees. Core Knowledge is a performance-based assessment instrument designed to help classroom teachers document and evaluate children’s development and accomplishments. The Core Knowledge is based on national and state standards and has been customized to conform to Head Start Child Outcomes Framework.

Children are observed during regular classroom activities and their progress is recorded three times a year. This type of authentic assessment through careful observations and documentation gives teachers in-depth knowledge, which helps them plan instruction that is more responsive to individual children as well as the class as a whole.
